Collaboratively, the OCSA Science Team will guide, challenge, and inspire students to become creative problem solvers, whose appreciation and understanding of the ever-changing nature of science cultivates engaged, responsible lifelong learners.

Mr. Josh Bourg was raised and educated in Orange County. He attended the University of California, Irvine and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 2016, and his Master of Arts in teaching in 2018. He cleared his single subject credential in physics in 2020 and has been at OCSA since 2022. Mr. Bourg currently teaches AP Physics 1 and College Prep Physics.

Chris Chong

Chris Chong earned his bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Biology from University of California, San Diego.  Mr. Chong has a CA teaching credential and a master’s degree in Cross-cultural Education. He and his wife have taught in Japan, Switzerland, England, and South Carolina as well as Southern California. He has two children, dual-citizenship in the UK, and loves paintball, surfing, and mountain biking.  Mr. Chong has taken students on ecological study programs to Honduras and Madagascar as well as on several service projects with Young Life in Eastern Europe.

Marla Cross holds a bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva, OK. Ms. Cross holds single-subject teaching credentials in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Physics. Ms. Cross earned her master’s degree in administration from California State University, Fullerton.

She joined Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) in 2007 and serves as an academic instructor of the Science department; she teaches Chemistry and AP Environmental Science classes.

Jessica Daniel holds a bachelor’s degree in public health and a master’s degree in teaching from University of California, Irvine. Ms. Daniel  joined Orange County School of the Arts in 2013 and serves as an academic instructor in the Science department.

She has taught honors biology, health, and life science at OCSA. Ms. Daniel loves both teaching and being a student and has recently completed her administrative services credential at California State University, Fullerton.

Marisa George holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from University of California, Santa Cruz. Ms. George earned a K-12 teaching credential and a master’s degree in teaching science from California State University, Fullerton. She joined Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) in 2001 and serves as an academic instructor of the Science department; she teaches physical science and environmental science classes.

Ms. George recently completed a Permaculture Design Course at the Ecology Center, where she and her classmates developed a blueprint design for OCSA’s Ecology Center.

Ron Grimm holds a B.S. degree in Conservation Biology from Kent State University.  He went on to earn an M.A. in Secondary Science Education from The University of Akron.  Mr. Grimm started his academic instructional career in 1999 and has taught a variety of science courses throughout the years, in addition to one year of Conversational English in Szeged, Hungary.   He joined the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) in 2011 and serves as a Biology instructor in the Science Department.

Ryan Haywood holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from University of San Diego. Mr. Haywood earned his single subject teaching credential and a master’s degree in education from University of Rhode Island. He joined Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) in 2017 and serves as an academic instructor in the Science department; he teaches chemistry classes.

Sarah Hurwitz joined the OCSA staff in 2012 and currently teaches OCSA's 8th Grade Physical Science course. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Science. While earning her undergraduate degree, she interned at the California ScienCenter's Hands On Summer Science Day Camp where she was inspired to make learning science as interactive as possible. 

She began her teaching career in the private school system and earned a California Single Subject Credential in Chemistry and a Master of Arts Degree in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University while working as a full time high school science instructor. Mrs. Hurwitz has taught a variety of math and science courses including; biology, chemistry, geometry, physical science, marine biology, and forensic science. She participated in the ExplOratorium's Teacher Institute in San Francisco in 2009 and was a recipient of the AFCEA STEM Teaching Tools Grant in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Heather Jonson holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular, cell and developmental biology and a master’s degree in education from the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned two single subject teaching credentials in chemistry and biology with a CLAD certificate and is a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. Ms. Jonson joined Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) in 2008 and serves as an arts instructor of the Culinary Arts & Hospitality Conservatory and an academic instructor of the Science department.

She teaches chemistry, honors chemistry and AP chemistry. In 2011, with the help of a very eager freshman, she started OCSA’s first Science Olympiad Team and is currently the advisor and coach. Ms. Jonson also started working with the American Chemical Society Education Committee of Orange County in 2010 and is now the Awards Chair of this local organization.

Christine Karlberg holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a single subject Life Science teaching credential from Whittier College. In 2020, she earned her Mater of Science degree in science education from California State University, Long Beach. She earned a CLAD certification through the Tustin Unified School District and the Orange County Department of Education. Ms. Karlberg joined the staff at Orange County School of the Arts in 2002 to teach Biology and high school level Life Science.   

Ms. Karlberg currently instructs two upper level science elective courses that she created: The Anatomy of Humans and the Parasites that Love Them and Zoology.  She continues to cultivate relationships with organizations such as the Southern CA University of Health Sciences, Pacific Marine Mammal Center, Santa Ana Zoo, and the BioTherapeutics, Education, and Research Foundation for experiential learning opportunities for her students.

She earned her science teaching credential and master’s degree from University of California, Irvine. Ms. Lee completed her student teaching at Orange County School of the Arts and is excited to be joining the team as an academic instructor in the Science department.

Marissa Mares earned a bachelor’s degree in Earth System Science from the University of California, Irvine along with a minor in Education Studies. While earning her undergraduate degree, she also worked towards her single subject teaching credential through the Cal Teach Program at University of California, Irvine.

Through the program, Ms. Mares taught geoscience at a 6th grade classroom in Santa Ana, 9th grade earth science at a high school in Santa Ana, and 8th grade physical science at a middle school in Corona. Ms. Mares joined the science department at the Orange County School of the Arts in 2016 and is thrilled to be teaching science there.

Taylor Nguyen grew up locally in Orange County and received his bachelor’s and master’s degree both from the University of California, Irvine. He has been teaching physics at different levels ranging from college prep to AP and IB since 2013. He joined Orange County School of the Arts in 2020 and teaches both the AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 courses.

Rima Semaan holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from California State University at Long Beach.  She also earned her single subject teaching credential in biology from CSULB and CLAD certification from the University of San Diego.  Mrs. Semaan joined the staff of the Orange County School of the Arts in 2006.  During her tenure, she has taught Honors Biology, Biology, and high school level Life Science.  Mrs. Semaan serves as a mentor to biology teachers new to OCSA.

Jon Sprekelmeyer holds a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Cardiopulmonary Health from California State University Long Beach, and a masters degree in education from California State University Dominguez Hills. He earned his teaching credential with CLAD certification and holds secondary teaching credentials in Health Science and Physical Education.

He joined Orange County School of the Arts in the spring of 2007 as a part time teacher, and in 2008 moved into a full time teaching position as an academic instructor in the Science department. He teaches primarily Health Science to the high school students.

Shelley Stanphill

Shelley Stanphill holds a bachelor’s degree in physics (with a minor in psychology) from Harvey Mudd College and a master’s degree in education from the University of California, Berkeley.  She holds two single subject teaching credentials in physics and chemistry with a CLAD certificate.  Ms. Stanphill joined the Orange County School of the Arts in 2010 and serves as an academic instructor in the Science department. 

She teaches physics and AP psychology, having originated the OCSA psychology program in 2012.  Ms. Stanphill is a senior fellow with the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation for promising secondary math and science teachers.  She also serves as the faculty adviser to the OCSA Key Club.

Chris Weitzel earned his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona.  He has been certified to teach Biomedical Sciences courses in STEM, with a focus in medicine.  He came to OCSA in 2015 and has taught AP Biology and Biology.
