Yoojung (Sally) Jang (CW, ‘23) was awarded the $2,000 Outstanding High School Project Award in the national Lowell Milken Center (LMC) Discovery Awards for her project, titled “A Voice in the Dark: Kim Hak-Sun’s Breakthrough Comfort Women Testimony.”

The following students were named semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selected more than 16,000 semifinalists who are competing nationally for nearly $28 million in scholarships, which will be awarded next spring.

The following students were selected as regional semifinalists in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program in recognition of their leadership, service, and academics, as well as their efforts to positively affect others in their community. Winners will be selected to receive a $20,000 college scholarship and to join a network of more than 6,000 Coca-Cola Scholar alumni that encourage, challenge, and support each other in their common goal of making the world a better place.

Olivia Le (CW, ’25) won Poetry Out Loud third place in the Poetry Ourselves State Champion for her original poem “My American Alphabet” and was invited to the State Capital to meet First Partner Jennifer Newsom for a program by CA Arts Council and Arts OC (awarded $100 plus expense paid to capital). She was also a finalist and runner up in the California Youth Poet Laureate. Her poem was also selected by the YoungArts for their Megafauna Land Dwellers Spring Exhibition. She also won second place in the Wrightwood Poetry Slam (awarded $200) and was runner up for the Poetry Week Contest from CommuterLit (awarded $25). In addition, her student letter to Danez Smith's poem was selected by the Academy of American Poets for the Dear Poet Program. Lastly, Olivia was Spoken Word opener for CA Poet Laureate Lee Herrick at his poetry reading in Newport Beach Public Library.

The following students placed first in OC RYSE out of 70 total students from Orange and Los Angeles counties. Hosted by Phil Kaye of Project VOICE, OC RYSE is the largest high school poetry slam in Orange County. Fourteen teams of high school students competed over the course of the two-day event. Jiin Yun (CW, ‘24) was featured in the Orange County Register for her recycling program that has gone national. She started a non-profit called the Recycling Dictionary that holds workshops across Orange County to educate younger students about smart recycling practices. In addition, Jiin authored a children’s book about recycling and developed an app that offers details on whether and how to recycle more than 500 common items. Milo Karnes (IA, ‘24) and Abbi Park (CW, ‘24) earned perfect scores on their AP Research exam, making them part of a select group of only 1.26% of students worldwide who received this distinction.

Jamie Jung (CW, ‘24) received a $500 Honorable Mention in the 2023 Discovery Award Competition through the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. For the competition, Jamie recited a 10-minute monologue on Marth Lum and the fight to end school segregation for Chinese Americans in the 1920’s.

Creative Writing Conservatory instructor Megan Friess had her teaching narrative, titled “Teaching Rhetoric Without a License,” published in a collection called “Threshold Conscripts: Rhetoric and Composition Teaching Assistantships.” The collection explores the diversity and complexity of universities through the lens of teaching assistants (TA) and how different collegiate programs help shape TA identities and practices.

Olivia Le (CW, ‘25) won the AutoEthnographer Student Scholarship for her collection of poems, “Born from Boat People.” She received a monetary award, publication, and was offered many other opportunities, such as participation in the AutoEthnographer podcast and the chance to help develop a column/feature for their magazine. Olivia was also the recipient of the Amanda Gorman Future Voices Poetry Prize offered by Beyond Baroque. This prize is open to high school students of color in California and awarded based on poetry/essay submissions that align with Amanda Gormon’s commitment to social change. Lastly, Olivia was asked by Get Lit to record a poem she wrote for the Women’s Journey Foundation at Load Bearing Studios in Santa Ana. This poem will be sent out to at-risk girls nationwide.

Members of the OCSA Robotics Team were invited to compete at the One World Showcase Event at University of California, Berkeley. Five teams from OCSA competed against 115 other teams from around the country. One of the five teams, Z Squared, was composed of Olivia Lee (VA, ‘25), Sunny Li (IM, ‘24), and Samantha Park (IA, ‘25), making them one of the less than 5% of teams that were made of all female members. Aryan Sharma (CW, ‘27) participated in the 69th Annual Orange County Science and Engineering Fair (OCSEF) hosted at Chapman University. Aryan took home first place in Category 1000 – Botany and was awarded the Dave Walkington Memorial Award for excellence in Botany, in addition to winning the RICOH award for next-generation technology innovation. He was also nominated to represent Orange County in the International Science & Engineering Fair, in which he was a finalist. Aryan spent five days networking and collaborating with other students who attended the event.

Five students advanced to State and were given the opportunity to compete in Sacramento with nearly 1,600 other talented students nationwide. Lisa Cho (VA, ‘25), Joseph Ho (IM, ‘24), Micah Lewison (CW, ‘24) and Brian Stevens (Director of Community Engagement) attended the second annual Thompson Autism and Neurodevelopmental Center at CHOC Conference in late March. Lisa, Joseph, and Micah are members of the Neurodiversity Club at OCSA. The conference featured keynote presentations, sessions, and panels that focused on community, inclusion of adults with disabilities, and teacher & student skills.

The following OCSA Advanced Placement Chemistry students collectively placed fourth out of 33 Orange County schools in the local section exam for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. The top four scorers will be honored at an awards dinner presented by the Orange County Section of the American Chemical Society. This local exam is the first stepping stone of many, with an opportunity to compete internationally.

William Bolin (CV, ‘24), Edward Chen (IA, ‘24), Amy Jong (IM, ‘24), and Jamie Jung (CW, ‘24) were selected among 625 semifinalists to advance to the final round of the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars competition.

Kelly Halliburton (CW, ‘25) was selected as a Save The Children’s National Youth Champion. The National Youth Champion program is a new opportunity for young activists to make a bigger impact for kids and stay committed to making a difference in their communities. Kelly, alongside five other champions, were invited to Washington D.C. to meet with Capitol Hill lawmakers and leaders of Save The Children.

Helena Donato-Sapp (CW, ‘27) was named the 2024-2025 Long Beach Youth Poet Laureate and a finalist for the 2024-2025 Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles County, where she was recognized as an Los Angeles Youth Poet Ambassador. Additionally, she was invited by the California Teachers Association to be a keynote speaker for two different conferences. Helena spoke on the topic of disability justice, a topic she is well-versed in as a globally award-winning activist on disability rights and inclusion. Her global recognition has also led to her likeness being used as the design for the National Education Association’s “Get Out the Vote” banner by Art Build Workers, a group of artists, designers, photographers, and educators based out of Milwaukee.

Tim Powers, Creative Writing Conservatory Instructor, received the 2024 Comic-Con International’s Inkpot Award. Inkpot Awards are given to individuals for their contributions to the world of comics, science-fiction/fantasy, film, television, animation, and fandom services.

The following students were named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. In order to compete for the scholarship, applicants must complete a detailed application and a written essay, have an outstanding academic record, and demonstrate leadership and service in the community.

Gordon Rocks (CW, ‘28) attended the premiere of “Griffin in Summer” at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Gordon starred alongside actors Kathryn Newton, Everett Blunck, Owen Teague, and many others. The movie, written and directed by Nicholas Colia, won the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, as well as two additional awards – Special Jury Mention for New Narrative Director and Best Screenplay for a U.S. Narrative Feature.

Shining Chen (CW, ‘26), Yaphet Chen (ACT, ‘28), Taven Rong (IM, ‘28), Paul Seo (DM, ‘26), and *Rohan Soni (PM, ‘26), also known as Team 11211X, competed at the Downey VEX Robotics Tournament where they were crowned tournament champions. They were also awarded the Design Award, which honors the team that best documented and explained their engineering design process via an engineering notebook and team interview. As a result, they were invited to compete at the California Robotics State Championship in March 2025.

Sofia Malone (ACT, ‘27), Elora Sparnicht (CW, ‘23), and Kaya Sparnicht (ACT, ‘25) wrote and starred in the short film “The Lethe.” This sci-fi film is about three college students who create a memory-altering device, but clash over the intended uses of their ground-breaking invention. The film was accepted into multiple film festivals, including the LA Shorts International Film Festival, Los Angeles Lift Off Film Festival, and Around International Film Festival Berlin. The film was awarded Best Thriller at the LA Film Awards, as well as Best Picture at the Old Towne Film Festival, held at The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana.

Mia Soumbasakis (CW, ‘22) was selected as a playwright for the 49th Pilipinx Cultural Night (PCN), a student-run theatrical production and the longest running cultural show at University of California, Berkeley. PCN allows participants to explore their Pilipinx identity through creative mediums such as dancing, acting, and music.

Taran Silverthistle (CW, ‘26) was a recipient of the Workforce Readiness Initiative at the Boys & Girls Club of America. Taran far exceeded the volunteer hours needed to receive the award due to his dedication in his club’s performing arts program. In addition, he also received recognition as one of the Youth Of The Month, representing his local Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Valley.

Vedant Dayal (CW, ‘25) and Ashima Sharma (CW, ‘25) started a program called Heart-to-Art! This initiative brings the joy of expressive arts, such as dance, acting, visual arts, guitar, singing, creative writing, and drums, to pediatric cancer patients, survivors, and their families in the Orange County and Los Angeles areas. Over 2,000 kids have already experienced the magic of creativity thanks to their work. They originally earned a $5,000 grant from the Dragon Kim Fellowship during spring 2024. Vedant and Ashima went on to win the top prize at the Dragon Kim Challenge, held at the Margaret A. Webb Theatre, where they were awarded an additional $5,000 to expand the Heart-to-Art program.

The following students were recognized as 2025 YoungArts Winners by the National YoungArts Foundation for their artistic achievements. YoungArts Award Winners receive a monetary award of $250, and Winners with Distinction are invited to participate in National YoungArts Week and have their work further evaluated for cash awards of up to $10,000. Attendees of National YoungArts Week who meet the eligibility requirements are also considered for nomination to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Sailee Charlu (CW, ‘27) was named a Scholarship Awardee in the MyImpact Challenge, The Bill of Rights Institute’s National Civics Contest. Sailee was also awarded the Gold Winner of the International Golden Classical Awards for her solo piano performance at Carnegie Hall and two Yale Mock Trial Association Awards – Top Witness and Top Attorney.
