2021 YoungArts Winners
The following students were recognized as 2021 YoungArts Winners by the National YoungArts Foundation for their artistic achievements. YoungArts award winners at all levels receive cash prizes between $100 and $10,000, and winners at the Finalist level are invited to participate in National YoungArts Week + in January, which features virtual classes, workshops, mentorship opportunities from leading artists in their fields, virtual performances, and an exhibition for the public.

OCSA Eye Matter Club Covered in Voice of OC Article
The OCSA Eye Matter Club, founded by Anjal Jain (CV, ‘22), was covered in an article by Voice of OC. The Eye Matter Club helps individuals with eye impairment to connect with each other through the arts. Eye Matter recently hosted online international art classes in nine different artistic disciplines for individuals with visual impairments. These art classes were taught completely by OCSA students and the visually impaired students' artistic performances were displayed during an international showcase. The following students are also members of the club.

Ritika Asher (CCD, '23) was the co-host for the Orange County Justice Fund’s (OCJF) annual fundraiser. OCJF is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to generating support for effective legal representation for the immigrant community, some of the most vulnerable residents in the county.

OCSA's Eye Matter club hosted a national online summer camp for visually impaired children
The following students from OCSA’s Eye Matter club hosted a national online summer camp for visually impaired children, utilizing a $5,000 grant from the Anekant Community Foundation. Over the course of five weeks, they focused on creating a supportive community and fostering a sense of belonging, all while combating ableism within the arts. Preston “PJ” Walker (BCD, ‘26) was recently awarded a $1,600 scholarship from the Petite Oasis Foundation, a non-profit that supports boys/men in their ballet training. He also won second place in the Senior Men's Classical category at Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP) regionals and first place with a cash prize in the Senior Men’s Contemporary Dance category at the YAGP regional semifinals in Los Angeles. At the YAGP finals in Florida, Preston participated in master classes and a week-long competition where he was offered four scholarships/acceptances for either short-term or summer intensive training. This summer he will be attending the Houston Ballet Summer Intensive for five weeks on a full tuition/housing scholarship and the Boys Ballet Summer Intensive, in Cary, North Carolina, for two weeks on scholarship.

Each story highlights the following: why they were forced to come to this country, what they endured in immigration detention, and their life after being released/deported.

The following students were recognized as grand prize finalists, semifinalists, and finalist award winners in The Music Center’s 34th Annual Spotlight Program. Spotlight is a nationally acclaimed arts training and scholarship program for teens that awards more than $100,000 in cash scholarships annually. Semifinalists have the opportunity to attend a special master class in their discipline with highly regarded artists who share their expertise on performance technique, training, and professional life. Each semifinalist then auditions once more, and the top two finalist performers in each category are selected for a total of 14 Grand Prize Finalists.

Ella, Emma, and Bryce performed in the South Coast Chinese Orchestra, and Katelyn and Angel accompanied them, performing with the Southern California Dance Company.

Aubrey Banaag was accepted into the Royal Ballet School of London, England
Aubrey Banaag (BCD, ‘27) was accepted into the Royal Ballet School of London, England, where she trained for two weeks over the summer. Of the 28 students accepted worldwide into this program, Aubrey was one of five from the USA and the only student from California. Aubrey also won Third Place in the Junior Classical Dance category in the San Diego regional competition of the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP).

The following students were recognized as 2023 YoungArts Winners by the National YoungArts Foundation for their artistic achievements. YoungArts Award Winners received a monetary award of $250 and those with Distinction are invited to participate in National YoungArts Week and have their work further evaluated for cash awards of up to $10,000. Attendees of National YoungArts Week who meet the eligibility requirements are also considered for nomination to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Aubrey Banaag (BCD, ‘27) and Preston Walker (BCD, ‘26) participated in the American Dance Competition’s Youth International Ballet Competition Finals in St. Petersburg, Florida. Aubrey placed 18th overall in the Female Division and Preston was the Senior Division’s Grand Prix recipient.

Preston Walker will be taking a sabbatical from OCSA in order to join the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company in Chicago for the 2024-2025 academic year, after first attending the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive
Preston Walker (BCD, ‘26) will be taking a sabbatical from OCSA in order to join the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company in Chicago for the 2024-2025 academic year, after first attending the Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive. Additionally, he has earned scholarships from Petite Oasis and Laguna Dance Festival, as well as monetary prizes from placing in regional national ballet competitions. Preston has also performed as a soloist at the Lincoln Center after advancing to the final round at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York.

Ella He, Emma He, Katelyn Hu, Bryce Leng, and Angel Shen performed together at the Ninth Annual Lantern Festival at the Segerstrom Concert Hall
Ella He (IM, ‘27), Emma He (IM, ‘25), Katelyn Hu (BCD, ‘24), Bryce Leng (CV, ‘24), and Angel Shen (CV, ‘25) performed together at the Ninth Annual Lantern Festival at the Segerstrom Concert Hall with over 2,000 people in attendance. Katelyn and Angel performed traditional cultural dance forms as part of the Chinese Dance Company of Southern California. Emma played the Dizi (Chinese Flute), Ella played the Guzheng (Chinese Harp), and Bryce played the Erhu (Chinese Violin) with the South Coast Chinese Orchestra. They have also volunteered their time by participating in various community festivals within the greater Orange County area in the last few years.

OCSA STUDENTS ATTENDED THE 2024 UNITED STATES NATIONAL AMATEUR DANCESPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PROVO, UTAH
A group of OCSA students attended the 2024 United States National Amateur Dancesport Championships in Provo, Utah. The Latin Formation Team won Fifth Place in Division 1, while the Smooth Formation Team won Second Place in Division 2. Heather Torres Cancino (BR, ‘27) and Constantin Chekardzhikov (BR, ‘24) also placed second overall in the Rhythm Dance category.

Brent Cho and Ellie Yoshino created a nonprofit organization called B.E. Partners in Art
Brent Cho (ACT, ‘27) and Ellie Yoshino (BCD, ‘27) created a nonprofit organization called B.E. Partners in Art. The organization’s goal is to spread the love of art to communities and children who have limited art opportunities due to disabilities or economic difficulties. Brent and Ellie partnered with Beyond Blindness, a long-time pioneer in education for children with disabilities, to run a few summer camps and are planning future art activities.
