California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
(Replaces STAR Testing)
Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s):
In early October, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 484 which implemented a new assessment program for California. Known as the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, this assessment program is comprised of the following:
- Grade-level science assessments for the California Standards Tests (CSTs) in grades eight and ten
- Early Assessment Program (EAP) in English–language arts (ELA) and mathematics - used by California universities for class placement
- Smarter Balanced Field Tests for all seventh and eighth grade students
OCSA will be administering the grade level science assessments and EAP on Tuesday, April 22nd and Wednesday, April 23rd. Because of the testing on these days, OCSA will be on a modified schedule; there will be no block 7 or conservatory these days and students will be released from school at 1:30. Students not testing will have alternative activities to participate in.
The Smarter Balanced Field Tests will be administered to all students in seventh and eighth grade sometime between April 7th and May 16th. These tests are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for English and math, which California adopted in 2010 to describe what knowledge and skills students need to be well prepared for college and careers.
Part of the goal of the field test this year is to determine how well individual questions allow students to demonstrate what they know and still need to learn. We are also taking this opportunity to see how well our technical capabilities meet the demands of computer-based assessments and to see what resources our teachers and school may yet need. It is important to know that we will not be capturing scores from this field test; instead, we will use what we learn from this field test to help ensure a successful full launch of the system in the 2014-15 school year.
If you would like to see what types of questions students will be asked or how the test will be presented, there is a practice test available online. You are also encouraged to watch the videos below which provide an overview of the field tests.
