Bios
Steven Hyde, Director, Classical and Contemporary
Dance Conservatory
Steven Hyde joined the Orange County High School of the
Arts in 2006 and currently serves as director, Classical and
Contemporary Dance Conservatory. He began his dance training
at Ballet Florida under the artistic direction of Marie Hale
in 1980. In 1983, Hyde was invited by Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s
Artistic Director, Arnold Spohr, to join the company as a
member of the corps de ballet. He quickly rose within the
company and was named a principal dancer in 1987. In 1988,
Hyde was invited by Evelyn Hart to perform at the
International Ballet Festival in Tokyo , Japan . In 1990, he
received the attention of the international ballet world when
he partnered Laura Graham at the 14th International
Competition in Varna , Bulgaria . Although not an official
competitor, Hyde was awarded the certificate for “Excellence
in Partnering.” He Hyde danced with the American Ballet
Theatre from 1993-96, performing many soloist and principal
roles partnering Paloma Herrera, Amanda McKerrow, Julie Kent
and Christina Fagundes.
In January 2000, Hyde retired from dancing and joined the
New England Ballet Company as ballet master/associate
director. Additionally, he served on the faculty of the
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of American Ballet Theatre
from 2003 - 2004. Hyde also instructed and choreographed for
American Ballet Intensives from 2005-2007, Kaatsbaan’s
International Dance Centers Summer Intensive Program from
2004-2007, and American Ballet Theatre's™ Summer Intensive
Program in Alabama from 2000-2003. Steven has guest taught at
Cornell University , Ithaca College and Skidmore College .
Almaliis Lauridsen
Almaliis Lauridsen joined the Orange County High School of the
Arts in 2007 and currently serves on the Classical and
Contemporary Dance Conservatory faculty. She began ballet at
the age of three at Ballet la Jeunesse and has studied for
more than 20 years at the Lauridsen Ballet Centre with Diane
Lauridsen, Alicia Head and Colleen O’Callaghan. Lauridsen’s
extensive performance experience includes roles with the South
Bay Ballet and Maryland Youth Ballet. Her ongoing studies in
the dance field also include classes in modern and jazz with
Helen Hayes at Joy of Motion in Bethesda , Maryland .
Lauridsen is also currently on staff at Lauridsen Ballet
Centre and South Bay Ballet. Additionally, Lauridsen has
studied Pilates and Gyrokineses with Alicia Head and is a
certified Pilates teacher through the Long Beach Dance
Conditioning Center . She is a former Pilates instructor at
Shape Shift, Vitality Health Center and Body and Mind
Co-Dynamics and a former sign language interpreter at Sign
Language Associates. Due to a fall which left her with a
serious injury, Lauridsen has become interested in
rehabilitation and is currently pursuing certification as a
personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports
Medicine. She believes that a holistic approach to the study
of dance will help all dancers maximize their potential.
Marie de la Palme
Marie de la Palme joined the Orange County High School of
the Arts in 2002 and currently serves on the Classical and
Contemporary Dance Conservatory faculty. She has danced in New
York for such choreographers as Alvin Ailey (Workshop
Company), Milton Myers, Alan Tung, Louis Falco and Margo
Sappington. Additionally, de la Palme has served as a teacher
for Jacques d’Amboise’s National Dance Institute and has
contributed choreography for his galas at Madison Square
Garden . In Orange County , she has taught at colleges and
private studios and choreographed numerous musicals. De la
Palme currently serves as a teacher / choreographer for Ballet
Etudes in Huntington Beach . She is a certified floor barre
instructor and has trained extensively in Pilates and the
Gyrotonic system. Her industrial credits include national
tours for Danskin, a commercial for FOX-TV’s National Hockey
League season, Marie Callender’s Golden Anniversary in Palm
Springs, and Lucent Technologies’ “wall dancing” presentation
at the 98 Inter+Op Expo in Las Vegas. Los Angeles Times dance
critic Lewis Segal called her piece “Rouge Impromptu,”
presented at Kaleidoscope 2000, “a brilliant example of
theatricality and movement design.” De la Palme is also the
Grand Prize Winner of the 2003 Palm Desert Choreography
Festival.
Rochelle Roberts
Rochelle Roberts joined the Orange County High School of
the Arts in 2002 and currently serves on the Classical and
Contemporary Dance Conservatory and Commercial Dance
Conservatory faculty. She graduated from California State
University , Long Beach (CSULB) with a bachelor of fine arts
degree in dance. While attending CSULB, she was chosen to
represent the university’s dance department at the American
College Dance Festival and the International Association of
Blacks in Dance Conference. Additionally, Roberts has studied
with River North Dance Company in Chicago as part of the
Invited Artists Program. She has danced professionally in the
modern dance world, performing with Bodytalk Dance directed by
Lauren Winslow Kearns and Benita Bike’s Dance Art Company. In
addition to her role at the Orange County High School of the
Arts, Roberts currently creates choreography for college dance
departments, pre-professional companies, studios and
nationally-ranked dance teams throughout the West Coast. She
is a part of the United Spirit Association Dance / Drill
staff, acting as a head instructor, instructor, choreographer,
regional and national judge, and part of the program
development team. Roberts has been named the “MVP” of 2003 by
the USA Dance/Drill Staff. Julie Rose Shulman
Julie Rose Shulman joined the Orange County High School of the
Arts in 2007 and currently serves on the Classical and
Contemporary Dance Conservatory faculty. She received her
training from Meredith Baylis and the Los Angeles County High
School for the Performing Arts. Shulman began her professional
career under the direction of Septime Webre at American
Repertory Ballet. She was then invited by Lawrence Rhodes to
join Les Grads Ballets Canadians, where she danced works by
Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin and various European choreographers,
as well as classics by Balanchine and Tudor. Following her
tenure with Les Grads Ballets Canadians, Shulman spent four
years in Europe . She spent two years in Switzerland
developing her contemporary style with the Orma Dance Company
under the direction of Enrico Musmeci and two years in Sicily
working with Compagnia Zappala Danza and the dance theatre
company MotoMimetico. From March 2005 - May, Julie had the
unique opportunity to dance in Bari with the Compagnia Niccolo
Piccini. In November 2005, Julie returned to the United States
and joined Collage Dance Theatre under the direction of Heidi
Duckler for the Premiere of “Copera.” In February 2006,
“Copera” premiered at the Los Angeles Police Academy . That
same month, Julie joined the John Malashock Company to begin
work on Malashock’s newest creation, “Fathom.” In May 2006
“Fathom,” premiered to glorious success in San Diego ,
California .
