Audition
Requirements

(Grades 7-12)
Students will review technical combinations as well
as learn and perform a portion of a dance from one
of the regions of Mexico. Come prepared to present a
dance or routine of your choice. You must provide
your own music (cassette or CD). Please note that
this conservatory is looking for advanced and
intermediate dancers. Beginning level dancers are no
longer considered.
CLASSICAL / CONTEMPORARY DANCE
(Grades 7 through 12)
Your audition will consist of taking a ballet class that includes barre work and
center work as well as pointe work. A modern combination will be included.
Female students must have pointe experience to be considered for admission. We
will notify you of any additional requirements once your application has been
processed.
COMMERCIAL DANCE (Grades 7 through 12)
Students will learn and perform choreography in jazz, tap, and ballet. They do
not need to prepare a routine ahead of time but will be able to demonstrate
ability in a dance area not listed above should time allow. We will notify you
of any additional requirements once your application is processed.
CREATIVE WRITING (Grades 9 through 12)
Please submit a notebook of your work with this application. The
notebook should contain samples of your writing (between 10 and 20 pages) –
short story, poetry, creative or personal essay, song lyrics – any kind of
writing. The samples can be complete or incomplete. Two or three pages of a
longer work, for example, would be perfectly appropriate if the story is
unfinished. In addition, please include an essay on the topic described on the
Creative Writing Department application page. Students who progress to the
second round of the selection process will be scheduled for an interview with
the department director.
FILM AND TELEVISION (Grades 9 through 12)
Please bring to the audition a sample of your best film or video
work on VHS tape or DVD. This could be a compilation of short films or a single
work. Also bring a writing sample for a 5-minute film you would like to see
produced. You may submit this in one of the following formats: 5-page
screenplay, 2- to 5-page short story, 1-page story synopsis, or 20-30 storyboard
frames.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
(Grades 7 through 12)
(Note: sight-reading is required in all areas)
Strings, Woodwinds,
Brass, Percussion, Harp, Classical Guitar:
Demonstrate knowledge of major scales. Demonstrate two distinct
styles of solo playing:
1) Lyrical, melodic, and slow,
2) Fast and more technical.
Bring two extra copies of your music for the adjudicators. The
music will be returned.
Percussionists:
Snare Drum (REQUIRED of all applicants). Play Etude 15,
22, or 30 from “Intermediate Snare Drum Studies” by Mitchell
Peters or Etude 1, 2, or 3 from “Portraits in Rhythm” by Anthony
Cirone. Play the following rudiments: Long Roll (open and
closed), Flams, Drags, Ruffs, and Paradiddles. In addition,
choose one (or both) of the following disciplines: Mallets: Any
Major or minor scale (you will be expected to know all 3
versions of minor). A 2-mallet work of your choice such as any
piece from “Masterpieces for Marimba” by Thomas McMillan or any
piece from the 2nd section of “Fundamental Studies for Mallets”
by Garwood Whaley. Optional: any 4-mallet marimba/vibraphone
piece such as “Yellow After the Rain” by Mitchell Peters
(marimba) or any etude by Clair Omar Musser (marimba) or any
etude from “Vibraphone Technique: Pedaling and Dampening” by
David Freidman. Drumset: Play time in a variety of tempos and
dynamics (with appropriate fills) in at least 5 of the following
styles: Big Band Jazz, Combo Jazz, Jazz Waltz, Mambo, Bossa
Nova, Samba, Funk, Rock. You may also be asked to sight read a
basic chart in any of these styles. Bring your own mallets to
the audition.
Piano
Classical focus: Present one work by J. S. Bach from among the
following choices ONLY: any Invention, Sinfonia, Prelude and/or Fugue from Books
I or II of The Well-Tempered Klavier, any movement from any French Suite,
English Suite, Partita, Toccata, or any Italian Concerto movement. Little
Preludes or Fugues and pieces from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook will not be
accepted. Present two additional works or movements by standard classical,
romantic, or twentieth century composers. No pop music or arrangements of
classical repertoire will be accepted for the audition. At least one piece
should be performed from memory. Be prepared to demonstrate ability at sight
reading. Students auditioning for grades 7 and 8 will be asked to play the
white-note major scales, 2 octaves, hands together, and students auditioning for
grades 9 through 12 will be asked to play all major scales, 4 octaves, hands
together, two-eights equals metronome 137. Jazz focus: Present two jazz
standards, demonstrating improvisation skills in at least one, plus one
classical piece which conforms to the classical focus requirements.
Jazz / Commercial Music
Demonstrate various jazz styles. Ability to
improvise is recommended. This department is now open to pianists.
Guitarists must read conventional music notation and not
tablature. Please bring your own amp. Drummers must read basic
rhythmic notation and patterns and bring their own sticks.
Drummers must also recognize and read conventional music notation.
INTEGRATED ARTS (Grades 7 - 11)
Students will participate in a personal
interview with OCHSA staff. They should bring to this interview as many items as
possible that demonstrate their talents, interests, and potential for growth in
the arts. These items can include a song, monologue, dance, art work,
instrumental piece, set design, video, or creative writing. Songs and monologues
must be memorized. Please provide your own accompaniment.
MUSIC AND THEATRE (Note: Please
select one major ONLY - musical theatre, acting,
or voice)
Musical Theatre (Grades
7 through 12)
Prepare one vocal selection, uptempo or ballad (no more
than 32 bars) and one memorized monologue (no more than 1 ½
minutes in length). You must provide your own accompanist or
accompaniment track (cassette or CD). No a capella singing
will be allowed.
For audition material, please refer to the suggestions for
Acting and Voice. Be sure to prepare one song and one
monologue.
Acting (Grades
9 through 12 only)
Prepare two memorized monologues - one
dramatic and one comedic (no more than 1 ½ minutes long each).
In addition to published plays and monologue anthologies, some of
the following titles are available at bookstores, libraries, and
online. Audition material is not limited to these titles but
should be age-appropriate and must be from a published source - no
original works.

Voice

(no more than 32 bars each). You must provide your own accompanist
or accompaniment track (cassette or CD). No a capella singing will
be allowed.
In addition to published works from musical scores or popular
sheet music, some of the following titles are available at
bookstores, libraries, and online. Audition material is not
limited to these titles but should be appropriate to the student's
vocal range and style.

Singers may want to choose works by the

Styne.
OPERA (Grades 7
through 12)
Please prepare two
classical songs or arias, preferably one in a foreign language. You must provide
your own accompanist or accompaniment tape or CD
PRODUCTION AND DESIGN
(Grades 9 through 12 only)
Students will be
required to prepare a portfolio including costume, property, and scenic designs
for one scene from a dramatic play of their choice. If they are unsure of a
play, they may choose Act 1, Scene 1 of The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs by
William Inge. Students will be adjudicated on their creativity, not on their
artistic abilities. Students will be invited to attend a personal interview to
present their portfolio and discuss their project.
VISUAL ARTS
(Grades 7
through 12)
Students are asked to bring a labeled portfolio or any type
of carrying case containing ten to twenty original artworks
produced in the last two years only. Artworks can include
drawings, paintings, photos, prints, three-dimensional items,
ceramics, etc. Please, no glass frames. All artworks will
go home with the applicant following the audition. In addition,
students will produce three in-person drawing exercises during an
audition that will last approximately 1 ½ hours.
